What Is Viscose Spunlace Nonwoven Used For? A Guide for Manufacturers and Buyers

Sep 29, 2026

If you are searching for viscose spunlace nonwoven manufacturers, you probably want quick answers: what the fabric does, which grade suits your product, and what to ask a supplier before ordering. This guide covers the technical points buyers raise most often, from absorbency and biodegradability to GSM and customization.

What Is Viscose Spunlace Nonwoven?

Viscose spunlace nonwoven is a fabric made from viscose (rayon) staple fibers that are bonded by hydroentanglement. High-pressure water jets strike a loose fiber web, and the fibers wrap around each other and lock in place. No latex, resin or thermal binder is needed. Aojia describes this process on its spunlace nonwoven fabric, where jet pressure typically ranges from 30 to 200 bar depending on fiber type and target weight.

Hydroentanglement: water jets lock fibers together without chemical binders.

Why Is Viscose Used in Spunlace Nonwoven Fabric?

Viscose is regenerated cellulose. It is soft, hydrophilic and skin-friendly, and it releases liquid well. Compared with polyester, it holds far more moisture; compared with cotton, it is finer and more uniform, so it forms a cleaner web at low weights. Viscose is also a renewable, plant-based fiber. Aojia's own guide notes that viscose has high moisture regain, up to 11% under standard conditions.

The trade-off is wet strength. Viscose loses tensile strength when saturated, which is why many products use a viscose/polyester blend, commonly 70/30, to keep the fabric from tearing during use.

Is Viscose Spunlace Nonwoven Absorbent?

Yes. Absorbency is the main reason buyers choose it. Because viscose fibers have a high specific surface area and a cellulose structure that attracts water, viscose spunlace takes up liquid quickly and holds it. Three variables matter most:

  • Viscose content: higher viscose share raises capacity and softness; polyester adds strength and reduces capacity.
  • GSM and thickness: a heavier web stores more liquid per square meter but releases it more slowly.
  • Surface texture and finish: patterned or embossed belts change wicking, and a wettability treatment improves rapid uptake.

Buyers should ask for test data using the ISO 9073 series: absorption capacity (ISO 9073-6), demand absorbency (ISO 9073-12) and mass per unit area (ISO 9073-1). This lets you compare suppliers on equal terms. For serum-loaded sheet masks, see Aojia's facial mask nonwoven fabric. For rapid water uptake and release, see the hydrophilic spunlace face towels.

Is Viscose Spunlace Nonwoven Biodegradable?

Cellulose fibers can be broken down by soil and compost microbes into carbon dioxide, water and biomass, so 100% viscose spunlace is generally regarded as biodegradable. There are important limits, though.

Cellulose breaks down through microbial action under suitable conditions.
  • Blends: polyester content does not biodegrade, so a 70/30 blend is only partly biodegradable.
  • Additives and lotions: binders, coatings and preservatives can change results.
  • Conditions: speed depends on temperature, moisture and microbial activity. Industrial compost and a home garden are very different.

If you plan to make a claim, ask for third-party test reports, such as ISO 14855 (aerobic biodegradation under composting), OECD 301B, or EN 13432 for compostable packaging. Claims apply to the finished product, not only the base fabric. For a plant-based household option, see the viscose spunlace pulp cleaning cloths. Note that biodegradable does not mean flushable; flushability is judged separately, for example under the EDANA/INDA flushability guidelines.

Is Viscose Spunlace Suitable for Wet Wipes?

Yes, and it is one of the most common substrates for them. A wet wipe base must survive lotion saturation, sealed storage and hard pulling from the pack, while feeling soft on skin. Viscose gives softness and liquid retention; a polyester share gives wet tensile strength. Wood pulp/viscose blends are widely used for cost-effective cleaning cloths.

Common wipe compositions: softness, strength and cost move in different directions.

Check these before you specify a wipe: wet tensile strength (ISO 9073-18), lint generation (ISO 9073-10), lotion compatibility, and packaging weight. Regulation matters too. In the EU, wipes containing plastic must carry labeling under the Single-Use Plastics Directive (EU) 2019/904, so fiber composition affects your artwork, not just your fabric. Explore Aojia's wipes series, the spunlace nonwoven for wipes and the embossed wavy-textured kitchen wipes, which add sizing to reduce fiber shedding.

Can Viscose Spunlace Be Used for Medical and Personal Care Products?

Yes. Spunlace has no chemical binder, which removes a common source of irritation and makes it a natural fit for skin contact. In personal care it appears in sheet masks, face towels, cleansing wipes and hair removal strips. See Aojia's cosmetology range and the spunlace depilatory cloth.

Wound care asks for more. A dressing substrate needs fast exudate absorption, wet strength for repositioning, low linting so particles do not enter the wound, and biocompatibility. Viscose supplies absorbency; polyester keeps the fabric intact when wet. That is why Aojia produces its medical spunlace for wound dressings in a 70/30 viscose/polyester ratio. Browse the full medical series for more.

Note for medical buyers: the fabric is only one part of compliance. Sterilization, biological evaluation (ISO 10993) and final device regulation are the responsibility of the finished-product manufacturer, so confirm the scope with your supplier early.

What GSM Should Buyers Choose for Different Applications?

GSM (grams per square meter) sets the balance between softness, strength, capacity and cost. Aojia's range runs from about 28 to 120 gsm. The chart shows typical starting points; final choice should always be confirmed on samples.

Typical GSM windows: face mask 30–50, wipes 40–60, wound care 40–80, kitchen 50–100, technical 60–120.
  • Light (28–45 gsm): maximum softness and low cost, but lower wet strength.
  • Mid (45–70 gsm): the usual range for wipes and face towels.
  • Heavy (70–120 gsm): scrubbing, wiping cloths and technical use.

Also ask for the GSM tolerance, since narrow tolerance means consistent performance between batches. For heavy-duty needs, see the wiping cloth series; for industrial uses, the base cloth series, including leather base fabric, and the home improvement series, which includes wall cloth.

How Do Viscose Spunlace Manufacturers Customize the Fabric?

A good manufacturer adjusts the fabric at each stage of production rather than only selling a fixed grade.

Fiber selection and blendCarding / cross-lappingHydroentanglingDrying and treatmentFinishing and slitting
Every stage offers a customization point.
  • Fibers: viscose share, polyester, pulp or lyocell blends, fiber denier and length.
  • Web and bonding: parallel or cross-lapped webs for balanced strength; jet pressure and belt pattern for surface texture.
  • Treatments: sizing, hydrophilic, water-repellent, flame-retardant, anti-static, anti-bacterial, anti-UV, dyeing and printing.
  • Format: width up to 3,200 mm on cross-lapped lines, plus roll length and slitting.

Aojia operates two spunlace production lines, one for high-quality volume products and one for new product R&D, and offers OEM/ODM production with one-stop control. Learn more about the company, see the hot products, or read more industry news.
